A Typical Lesson
Lessons in the Salem Suzuki Violin Studio take place at Ms. Mayers' home in Winston-Salem. Younger students attend lessons with their practice partner, and students older than 12 years old are welcome to take lessons on their own. Practice parents play a crucial role in a child's early musical development, since they act as "home teachers" during daily practice. Each lesson focuses on a wide variety of musical skills.
Technique
Students are more likely to enjoy things they can do well, so we spend a significant amount of time in each lesson making sure that your child is developing proper technical habits on the violin.
Note Reading and Theory
I supplement the Suzuki repertoire with a curriculum of note reading and music theory. This ensures that students become musically literate as well as being proficient on the violin.
Solo Repertoire
Your child will mainly be practicing solo pieces, or pieces written for one violin (rather than an orchestra or chamber ensemble). In the Suzuki Method, this solo repertoire is carefully selected to introduce new techniques and musical skills one at a time.
Ensemble Skills
I play harmonies and accompaniment parts for my students in every lesson. It takes practice to learn to play with others, and your child will start acquiring this skill from the very beginning.
